Gaddis Family History

This site is dedicated to the direct descendants of Grover Cleveland and Pinkie (Beck) Gaddis of Talladega, Alabama.

GROVER CLEVELAND GADDIS AND PINKIE BECK GADDIS

Grover and Pinkie were married in Talladega County, Alabama in 1908. Ten children were born into their union; Nennie, Ida, Genie, Bertha, Leola, Ruth, Henry, Isiah, Alvin, and Matthew. Both Grover and Pinkie were born in 1888. The 1900 U.S. Census, however, indicates that they were both born in 1889. Grover was born in Alpine, Alabama, and Pinkie was born in Tilton, Georgia

GADDIS ANCESTRY

Grover was the son of William Gaddis and Sally Kelly Gaddis. Grover's father, William, was born in Coosa County, Alabama, in 1864. Grover's mother, Sally, was also born in Coosa County, Alabama, in I864. William and Sally married in 1886 and then moved to Alpine, Alabama. They had seven children; William Jr., Grover Cleveland, Lina, Charlie K., Calvin H., John F., and Hattie. Children are listed in order of birth.

William's father, and Grover's grandfather, Dennis Gaddis, were born in North Carolina in 1826. Dennis was later moved to the Socapatory district in Coosa County, Alabama. (NOTE: Socapatory is located where Highway 9 intersects U.S. 280 in Coosa County).

William's mother, and Grover's grandmother, Harriett Gaddis, were also born in North Carolina. She was born in 1837. Harriett, like her husband Dennis, was later moved from North Carolina to the Socapatory district in Coosa County, Alabama. Grover's grandparents, Dennis and Harriett, had six sons and one daughter. Children are listed in birth order: Benjamin, William, Emery, Eliza, Berry M., Thomas, and Dennis Jr.

BECK ANCESTRY

Pinkie Beck Gaddis was born 1888 in the Tilton district, Whitfield County, Georgia. Pinkie, along with her siblings and parents, Terrell and Callie Vann Beck moved from Whitfield County, Georgia to Renfroe, Alabama, shortly before 1900. Terrell Beck was born in South Carolina in 1842, as indicated on the 1880 U.S. Census. Callie Vann Beck was born in 1845, probably in Whitfield County, Georgia. Terrell's and Callie's children, listed in the 1880 U.S. Census, were: Doc, John H., Burrel M., Granville, Loureava, Eugenia, and Julia E. Children living in their household, according to the 1900 U.S. Census, were: Genia, Terrill, Lula, Milla, Pinkie, Jennie, and Burrell.

Terrell and Callie had 13 children. In 1900 only 11 were still alive, and only seven resided in their household. None of the Beck children were born in Alabama, including Burl, the youngest. The 1880 and 1900 U.S. Censuses also provide conflicting information. For example, in 1880, Terrell was 30-years old and Callie was 32-years old. But on the 1900 U.S. Census, Terrell was 57 and Callie 54. This means that Terrell was either born in 1842 (1900 Census) or in 1850 (1880 Census). Callie was either born in 1845 (1900 Census) or in 1848 (1880 Census).
